Manufactured in 1965 by the Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Limited, Crewe, Cheshire, this Phantom V Art Car owned by John Lennon could almost be titled the ultimate retro luxury automobile with its extraordinary customizations that followed in the years to come. Lennon had the vehicle’s rear seat altered into a double bed and had the car fitted with a custom interior/exterior sound system, a Sony television, a telephone and a portable refrigerator. In 1967 the automobile got its £2,000 “Psychedelic” paintjob done by Dutch team of gypsy artists commissioned by J.P. Fallon Limited, a coachworks company located in Chertsey, Surrey. Of course the car drew the attention of critics and fans alike and an old lady even attacked the vehicle for outraging the symbol of British dignity! The automobile was subsequently brought out by Jim Pattison’s Ripley International Inc. for exhibition at Ripley’s “Believe It Or Not” museum in 1985 for a sum of $2,299,000 making it the most expensive and famous art automobile of the time. Watch the vehicle in action in the tribute video with Lennon and the “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” sound track after the jump.
