Peugeot Omni: The manifestation of Omni-Wheel!
Posted on Aug 11, 2008 02:09:23 PM |

This day seems to be a pretty good day for automobiles that are conceptualized and yet to take the roads; or even the manufacturing stage for that matter. It isn’t that every Concept automobile is a visualization of unrealistic dreams and there are a few ones out there that one would really want to see make it through production. We have already had a couple like that today and the Peugeot Omni Concept is also something that we would love to see hit the road. Even if it does not make it out in production numbers, even a few prototypes will do to satisfy us!
In 1973, Bengt Ilon, a Swedish automobile designer visualized the dream of Oni-Wheel. He crafted a wheel that could move in any direction at a given time. The concept was not obviously picked up or developed through the decades. The idea was to attach many roller-wheels around the rim of the main wheel to enable the wheel to spin in any direction and change angles at an instant. The rollers were oriented at an angle of 45 degrees with the wheels axis of rotation. The wheel subsequently came to be know as ‘Ilon Wheel’.

The new Concept Design of the Peugeot Omni uses the Omni wheel concept of the great designer from past to make sure that there are no parking hassles for you at any point. Since the car can spin and turn around at an instant, you will not need to worry about findings those angles anymore. A very interesting basic idea expanded in to a very useful concept design. The Omni-Wheels is truly awesome!
