15 Concept Cars: Too awesome to go into production

Posted on Dec 23, 2008 06:40:00 AM

There was a time when locomotives had revolutionized the mass transportation around the globe, and then the trend of individual transportation grew in no time. Technology never let scientists and designers look back and today we are at a point where ultra futuristic concepts are being planned. With future concept cars and unusual future vehicles, problems with traffic congestion and the accompanying environmental concerns are subject matter of debate. Zero-emissions, hydrogen, powered, electrically controlled, driverless cars, flying cars, foldable vehicle concepts, and many other ultra advance designs pop up each day. The Lynx Concept comes from an amazing level of analysis and studies, which we have not seen in many concept designs. Designer Manuel Schneider teamed up with Mario Weiss, and the duo collected data on things like future visions, prognoses, statistical changes and technical possibilities to generate a timeline for a hundred years. This information was then used to create a car of the future – Lynx.

The CMC Apex could have born as a result of an orgy that had a car, truck, motorcycle and helicopter; that is some explanation how it got its distorted form, and the genes. Power for the vehicle comes from a supercharged 4 or 6 cylinder engine that commands 300 horses. The four-wheel drive concept can do some offroading and the heavy-duty suspension fits the bill perfectly.

Urban traffic is increasing each day, and so are the concept solutions to the problem. What isn’t exactly coming up is a complete solution. All concepts have more or less the same features – electricity powered, less space consuming vehicles. The cityAnt is another concept in that general direction; the electricity powered automobile has small dimensions to fit well with the urban traffic. What we like about this concept is that it does not need dedicated lanes or hyper advanced technology, users can simply drive about this automobile like ordinary cars, it however does require extensive infrastructure, according to the vision of the designers.

Gamma uses transparent polycarbonate to create a very special concept

Electronics with transparent bodies have been around for sometime now, and designer Niels Grubak Iversen now seeks to apply that to vehicles, with his Gamma concept. The concept’s body uses transparent polycarbonates and composite materials to reveal the underlying parts. The transparency of course, comes from the polycarbonate, which is then glued to the aluminum chassis, reinforced by carbon and kevlar. If you drooled over the transparent engine covers of the Audi R8 concept, then Gamma takes the pitch even higher. Transparency is really cool, and watching the machinery in motion would more than make up for the extensive cleaning effort you’d have to put in to this automobile.
